Poolwaves hit the radio...

Blog: Poolwaves hit the radio...

Want to catch up with some of the best projects created by our community on Pool? Have a a listen to Poolwaves or tune into ABC Radio National Thursday 21 January just after the midday news.

The adventure starts with ABC Radio National’s artist-in-residence Linda Neil’s minstrel journey. You’ll hear Buckets of Roses by Pool member Paul McGann, remixed by Linda, from her Pool project Our Year of Singing Love Songs. And hear Linda talking about how love songs can change individuals and the world.

You’ll also get the inside scoop on Cornelius Zane-Grey’s (aka The Flickerman) attempts to find his missing girlfriend Lucinda. Cornelius’ life imploded in the UK in October 2008 when he was beaten up by unknown attackers and his girlfriend Lucinda disappeared. Various clues pointed to her possibly making her way to Australia and so Cornelius extended an invitation to Poolies to “look through your photos, your old videos, for a blonde haired woman – in the background, a silhouette, passing the frame, or for shots of where you think she could be”. The Flickerman, a four part radio play, tells the story of what happened to Lucinda on Radio National’s Airplay throughout January.

From Brighton in the UK to East Arnhemland in the Northern Territory – The students at Ramingining Community Education Centre are embracing digital media to tell their stories, in their own languages, through podcasts uploaded to Pool. Matthew Alterator, who works with local communities in this fascinating remote corner of Australia, gives the lowdown on digital media projects that support the students' desire to tell their own stories to the wider world.

Our Sea Things collaboration also segues on to radio as Gretchen Miller joins the slow boat from Cairns to Thursday Island. She sets sail with a duffle bag stuffed with poems from some of Australia’s finest wordsmiths, secondary school students and Poolie poets as part of The Sea Things national literary project, a seafaring odyssey up the east and west coasts of Australia. Cairns resident, Poolie and bush poet Dave Delaney shares his experiences and his poem Ocean Life.

Snippets from our Gene Pool project are also featured. The project asked people to respond to the question ‘why are you ... you?’ and Poolies came to the party with some wonderful contributions. With access to ABC open archives for inspiration, stories, poems, songs, audio and video submissions came flooding in with some of the highlights featured on Radio National’s All in the Mind.
