Blog: Research - Rebuild
Pool is being used as a social media research platform by several academic institutions and they are starting to feed their findings back in to help inform the Pool rebuild process.
You might have heard about the RMIT ACID report into the new version of Pool. We also have had a researcher in residence complete an independent study into Pool groups as part of his Honours in an Applied Communication research project. The result can be seen here at the Stage Fight group.
Over the past year, Jonathon Hutchinson has been researching social media practices as part of his RMIT Media Studies Honours degree and has used Pool as a focus to explore the relationship between broadcast media, social media and how the two forms interact with each other, whilst examining the community that empowers these spaces. For the research Jonathon created a Pool group, called for submissions, and looked on as the Pool community got creative.
Some of the submissions included Tickled Ivory’s by Rossco, a photo that was picked up by ABC Arts and featured on their new work page; and A_12 by two4k a musical piece that was picked up by Tim Ritchie and broadcast on Radio National’s Sound Quality.
But it didn’t stop there with the contributions coming into the Stage Fight group with national recognition; it morphed into many outcomes including one in the form of a remix of the content. It didn’t stop there either.
Due to the success of responses to the project and some external interest, the project was incorporated into the 2009 Electundra Festival where a curated version of the material was displayed to the audience members. The response was overwhelming with nothing but positive feedback flowing from the experience.
Projects such as this show the creativity that explodes out of the Pool community, and has given an example of what is possible with a little bit of collaboration and co-creation.
If you haven’t already, we urge you to go over to the groups page and have a look at some of the wonderful projects that are happening over there. If nothing grabs you, why not start your own and get some tasty remixing and co-creation happening?
If you are interested in reading the results of the study (which includes a how to create a successful group 101), head over to here.

Another great insight into Pool and how it all works and who is working behind it.
Cheers
