Image: blind street musicians in oaxaca, mexico
I was in Oaxaca, in southern Mexico, late last year for the Day of the Dead celebrations. The city is always wild with art and music. The only thing it was lacking then was tourists because a year before, the government had opened fire on a demonstration of striking teachers, killing several people. This was in the middle of every tourist's favouite cafe spot, the zocalo, where you find many musicians.
There was another demonstration to mark the anniversary of the deaths a couple of days after I arrived in Oaxaca. I was recording street musicians for a documentary and when I returned to Australia I went on the web to try to find images to add an extra dimension to the sounds. Sometimes it's impossible to imagine the intensity of the colours in Mexico.
I'd recorded the man on the right - his name is Fidencio - and had heard of the man on the left but never encountered him. This photograph is by Warren Lyle. He lives in Oaxaca now and spent a lot of his youth there, so he got to know the street musicians. He gave me permission to post this photo.
you can find more of his wrok on flickr at: http://flickr.com/photos/mrpmosh/favorites/
