Text: Underbelly Arts Lab: Day 3
Text
The first day of Underbelly’s Lab Weekend was very much bustling. The doors opened to the public at 4pm and outside ready and waiting were eagre arts supporters and market lovers, a telling prelude to the hundreds that turned up over the night. The artists and designers who were part of the twilight markets peppered their stalls throughout the foyer. Trestle tables where spread with colourful and unique hand made bags, politically incorrect patches, patchwork ties, funky hoodies and exquisite light boxes. One stall ‘Peek a booth’ dressed up their patrons for a series quirky Polaroids to take home as a remembrance of their evening of weird and wonderful festivities. Indeed what was created in the foyer on Lab Day 3 was like a mini festival with music, stalls, sideshows, kids young and old and lots to discover!
The second of the Underbelly Exchange: Free Talks Program took place again in the Carriageworks café. Saturdays night topic was “Navigating the Grey: Re-imagining Art, Craft, Design & Technology” and a panel of mathematicians, designers, writers and artists discussed the ever present ‘grey zone’ of Art and the evolution and/or crumbling of the form/s itself.
The Lab tours exposed more and more of the evolution and progress of the art in the making. All 5 tours where packed with interested and sometimes overwhelmed patrons, many grateful to have someone help them naviagte them around the diverse and intricate program of works.
This lovely Sunday morning I am sitting at the Regard Gallery on Wilson st where through the windows you can watch Underbelly unfold. I just finsihed listening to Kamicazee Couture on Fbi talking about their ‘Dreadlock Corset’, plugging another call out for dreadlocks - so any of you dreaded feinds out there, why not offer one of your matted friends imoortlaity as an wearable artwork!
